Desk Two, The President's Copy

Updated: Jan 2

Rutherford B. Hayes

The fac-simile marked number two originally owned by President Hayes has a number unique elements that distinguish it from the rest of it's sister desks.

The first is The president had received his by July 9, 1880. Period documentation shows the other replicas being distributed in December 1880. The other is the Hayes' example has a note in Hayes' writing attached where all the other known examples have a photographic reproduction affixed in the typical place on the carcass.

The replica marked number two was in his possession until it was added to the collection of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museum the union's first presidential library

I would like thank the very helpful and enthusiastic staff at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museum in Speigel Grove, Ohio. Not only have they been helpful very recently as well in the past regarding my research regarding the desks I continue to be in contact with Kevin and Julie with ongoing research into the mysterious circumstances regarding the entire series of the 1880 fac-similes. This will be discussed as it evolves in another posting.
